Common Core and Special Education
As you are all aware, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) focus on the utilization of abstract and inferential skills can be especially challenging for many of our students who receive special education services and supports. In order to assist in addressing these challenges, our department will focus on increasing our understanding of how to manage cognitive load for students (reducing the complexity of material, improving instructional design, and increasing fluency with foundational skills) as well as increasing our knowledge and implementation of effective co-teaching. These strategies will be discussed during staff meetings as well as professional development sessions throughout the year.
